Income Inequality
Tenri Cultural Institute, New York, NY
October 17, 2015

New music quartet Cadillac Moon Ensemble premiered pieces by Jeff Nichols, Julie Harting, Chi-hin Leung, and Iné
s Thiebaut  inspired by graphs showing income inequality.

Conversation was led by Chad Kautzer,  author of the book “Radical Philosophy: An Introduction.” Kautzer sees inequality as a foundational element of capitalism. “Capitalism transforms everything it comes in contact with into conditions for its own reproduction and, more specifically, for the accumulation of capital.  Capitalism emerges under conditions of great inequality, and it can survive only by reproducing such inequality.”

In addition to the four premieres, Cadillac Moon Ensemble performed  Nicholas Deyoe's “fl/vn” for flute & violin and an excerpt from Annie Gosfield's “Daughters of the Industrial Revolution” for cello and percussion, a piece inspired by her grandmother who worked in sweatshops in the Lower East Side.

Cadillac Moon Ensemble, a quartet of flute, violin, cello and percussion, is dedicated to commissioning and performing new works which explore the expansive sonic possibilities presented by its unique instrumentation. Its members are Roberta Michel, flute; Karen Kim, violin; Aminda Asher, cello; and Sean Statser, percussion.

Our First Concert
We started the series because we believe in social and economic justice and want our concerts to reflect that.  Some of the music we present is overtly political, some of it is more subtly political and some of it is not political. Our first concert was an evening of new music and conversation questioning the economics of today, under capitalism, and fomenting our desires for a post-capitalist economy.

The music of Julie Harting, Elizabeth Adams, Pauline Oliveros, Elizabeth Hoffman and Luciano Berio performed by
Felix del Tredici - trombone
Chris Gamboa - piano
Marianne Gythfeldt - bass clarinet
Nino Jvania - piano
